ChapterMark FAQ

What does ChapterMark do?

ChapterMark takes many smaller files of various formats and combines them into one audiobook file of type m4b, placing chapter stops at the boundaries of each file. Most audiobooks come as separate files or on many CDs so this software helps to produce a single file to easily organize and play on your iPod.

ChapterMark is not limited to only audiobooks either. It can put together music (mix-CDs), lectures, audio notes, etc. Anything where you would want to combine multiple audio sources, and put chapter stops in between.

What are the trial limitations?

You may use the full-featured trial version for up to 8 audiobooks.

What is an m4b file?

You may be familiar with m4a files which Apple uses for music. An m4b is a similiar file format but used for Audiobooks. Most players that support m4a files can also play m4b files. Both formats use AAC encoding for higher quality audio compared to mp3 at comparable file sizes.

In iTunes and the iPod, and m4b is handled differently compared to regular music files. They will show up in your Audiobooks library within iTunes instead of your regular song library. And when playing back on your iPod, your last position will be bookmarked and it will return to it the next time you play it. It can also contain chapter stops to easily skip through the file.

What is the maximum length of an audiobook?

The maximum length of a single m4b file is limited by the iPod player capabilities. If you encode using the "High Quality" setting, the maximum length is around 13.5 hrs in order to play back correctly on an iPod. At the "Low Quality" setting it will be almost 50 hrs. ChapterMark will automatically detect when a book has exceeded these limits and will split your audiobook into multiple, equal-length m4b tracks. These should play together seamlessly on your iPod.

What kind of audio files can I use to create audiobooks?

You can use a variety of audio formats including mp3, ogg, flac, m4a, m4b, audio CD, aiff, and wav.

What about DRM protected files?

ChapterMark does not remove DRM from your audio files. Thus DRM protected files such as content purchased on Audible or protected content from iTunes are not directly support.
